FFTCG Resurgence of Power
Sneak Peek!
FINAL FANTASY TRADING CARD GAME, abbreviated FFTCG, is played all around the world.
We’re excited to bring you an FF Portal-exclusive sneak peek of four cards from the newest FFTCG set, Resurgence of Power, which will be released on December 9th!
Once again, we bring you new card introductions from FFTCG producer Taro Kageyama and comments on their art from the illustrators who drew them!
Hello everyone! This is FFTCG producer Taro Kageyama. I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce a few cards from Resurgence of Power, a brand-new booster pack coming on December 9. This time, we have two FINAL FANTASY III cards by Gen Kobayashi and two FINAL FANTASY V cards by Miki Yamashita. Let’s get started!
I’d like to begin with Mr. Kobayashi’s cards. This time, he has drawn Hein (18-029R) and Xande (18-110H), two villains from FFIII. These illustrations capture the essence of the characters: Hein is eerie and mysterious, while Xande is violent and strong. Both cards are impressive, but the full art versions are particularly impactful, so I hope you have a chance to get your hands on them.
Now then, let’s delve into their abilities. First up, we have Hein (18-029R) with a cost of 5 and a power of 8000. While his power is slightly below average, he makes up for it with his abilities. Hein cannot be broken by Summon or Character abilities. He can be broken with enough damage, but Summons and abilities that specify “breaking” alone won’t work, making him quite a nuisance to your opponent. Furthermore, he can freeze up to four Characters when entering the field. Time it right and you can render your opponent’s four Backups unusable on the following turn, or stop their attackers for a single turn. This makes him quite the troublesome presence on the field.
Next, let’s take a look at Xande (18-110H). Xande is a multi-Element Forward with a cost of 4 and a power of 8000. He has two abilities, the first of which is, “When Xande enters the field, choose up to the same number of Forwards opponent controls as the Characters put in the Break Zone from your field during this turn. Deal them 9000 damage.” In other words, the more Characters you have in the Break Zone, the more of your opponent’s Forwards you can choose to damage.
Xande’s other ability is, “<Fire><Earth>, put 5 Backups into the Break Zone: Play Xande onto the field. You can only use this ability during your turn and if Xande is in the Break Zone.” This ability revives Xande from the Break Zone, but you can only have up to five Backups on the field as per the rules, so you will effectively lose all your Backups. That being said, having five cards in the Break Zone counts toward Xande’s first ability. This will put you at a severe disadvantage, but might allow you to deal a devastating blow.
【Comments from the Illustrator: Gen Kobayashi】
I was ecstatic when given the opportunity to draw characters from FFIII, a game I played obsessively during my elementary school years. I wanted to portray them as they were in the original while also depicting them as if they were facing off against the story’s heroes. How did I do? I hope I was able to convey Hein’s eeriness and Xande’s overwhelming power.
I’d like to introduce the cards illustrated by Ms. Yamashita next. They are Faris (18-012L) and Lenna (18-100L), two of FFV’s main characters. The illustrations are superb, and I can’t wait for everyone to see the full art versions of these cards as well. I think you’ll really enjoy them.
Let me tell you about their abilities. Faris (18-012L) has a cost of 3, a power of 7000, and three auto-abilities. Her first ability is, “When Faris enters the field or attacks, deal 1000 damage to all Forwards.” This is a wide-ranging but weak ability, and it is important to keep in mind that this damages all Forwards, including Faris.
Her second ability is, “When Faris or a Job Warrior of Light Forward you control is dealt damage, choose up to 1 Forward opponent controls. Deal it 3000 damage to it.” This means that if Faris attacks or blocks and the opponent’s power is 10000 or below, it will result in a draw. However, the real value of this ability comes when combined with Faris’s first ability. That ability damages Faris, which triggers this ability and deals 3000 damage to your opponent. If you have another Job Warrior of Light card, you can deal an additional 3000 damage. There are also abilities that increase the amount of damage dealt, so this ability can hit harder than you expect.
The third ability comes into play if you have taken three or more points of damage. “When Faris enters the field, you may search for 1 Job Warrior of Light other than Card Name Faris and add it to your hand.” We see this type of effect often, but that just speaks to how player-friendly it is.
Continuing on, we have Lenna (18-100L). Lenna is also quite standard with a cost of 3 and a power of 7000, but her abilities are somewhat technical. First up, we have her field ability: “All cards in your Break Zone cannot be removed from the game by your opponent’s Summons or abilities.” We often see abilities that can remove cards from the Break Zone, like those of Mist Dragon (9-068H) and Kadaj (11-140S), but these will be ineffective with Lenna on the field.
This ability also plays into Lenna’s second ability: “Remove 12 Water cards in the Break Zone from the game: Choose 1 Water Forward in your Break Zone. Play it onto the field. You can only use this ability during your turn.” Twelve Water cards is a high price to pay and will be a difficult condition to fulfill if cards like the aforementioned Mist Dragon (9-068H) interfere. Thankfully, Lenna’s first ability prevents cards from being removed from the game, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to activate her second ability.
【Comments from the Illustrator: Miki Yamashita】
Faris and Lenna are beautiful sisters, so it was both challenging and fun to draw them. I tried to create contrastive images of stillness and movement, but also make it seem like they have something in common. I hope you will pay close attention to their lips as I tried my best to make them look full.
How did you enjoy today’s cards? The booster pack containing these cards, Resurgence of Power, goes on sale December 9. I hope you’re excited for the release!
